This large figure from the Nukuma people of Washuk Hills, Upper Sepik River, is used within a process of Yam ceremonies to enhance harvest fertility. Said to represent a Water Spirit, the figure has strong repeating geometric engravings throughout, enhanced with pigments to create a strong stylized piece. Red tones have been applied to define the face and central forehead feature.
